Portrait of John Colby

John Colby

ohn Colby was born in the Boston area in 1955 and attended Gateway Arts from 1990 until 2017.

Colby is an interesting conversationalist with an unusual sense of humor. His body of work primarily includes poetry, drawings, paintings, and ceramic art. Colby conveyed a strong sense of rhythm through mark making. Concentrating on the movement of his hand, Colby would gain an understanding of where he built up visual and tactile texture through layered mark making. His approach combined with selective use or absence of color allowed him to create abstract drawings which present varied senses of depth.

Colby’s work has been shown at the Museum of Everything in London, England. In Massachusetts, his work has been exhibited at the Berenberg Gallery in Boston, The Gateway Gallery in Brookline, and the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton. His work has also shown in the Outsider Art Fair in New York and at Creativity Explored in San Francisco, CA.
