TechnoGateway Exhibition

September 10, 2019 - November 9, 2019

The Gateway Gallery is proud to present the Fall 2019 exhibition, “TechnoGateway”.
The works in this exhibition by Gateway artists are based in and inspired by digital technology. Over the past several years, new equipment, studios, and staff have been introduced to expand the artmaking opportunities for artists at Gateway. They work with computers, tablets, and large touch screens.  In the studios artists are blogging and writing, creating graphic novels, zines, and comics. Some artists collaborated with the Brookline Interactive Group for courses in digital storytelling, where they worked with computers and sound equipment to record videos. Much of this innovation was inspired by a Gateway program called “Bridging the Spectrum”, which seeks to respond to the needs of people with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Since 2016, more individuals on the spectrum have received funding from the Department of Developmental Services. Many of these Gateway participants have interests in digital media, inspired by animation in films and video games. As in the mainstream art world, Gateway artists are influenced by the popular arts. “TechnoGateway”, presents us with an opportunity to see how much the digital world has affected the artwork being created in the Gateway studios.

To present this exhibition Artistic Director Stephen DeFronzo stepped outside the box, printing digital artwork on interesting materials like Plexiglas, vinyl, and fabric.  The gallery features a video of artist Ashley Barbour creating one of many digital drawings.  The extensive writing and world building of Michael Natale, Giovanni Ricci, and Colleen McFarland are prominently featured, giving these artists the opportunity to showcase equal to that of their more visually inclined peers.

The exhibition is accessible, free, and open to the public Monday – Friday from 9:00-4:30 PM through November 9th, 2019.
