Gateway Arts will open its doors for Brookline Open Studios on Saturday, April 30. The studio art center has been in Brookline for over 40 years, and provides careers for over 100 artists from surrounding areas.
With the goal of providing individualized, arts-based services to adults with disabilities; Gateway Arts has grown to be one of the premiere progressive art studios for adults. Artists have exhibited their works extensively both nationally and internationally.
When asked why he chose to be an artist at Gateway, artist Nicanor says, “People told me that I was not smart, but art tells me that I can do something good. When I make art I feel peace and quiet that helps me. When I am making art I feel happy and strong.”
Nicanor will be one of the many artists whose artwork will be featured in BLOOM, the exhibition that will be on display during Brookline Open Studios. BLOOM features work responding to the season of spring, all working on the same size canvases. From self-taught to visionary and classically trained, the artists at Gateway display their varying styles and ways of working.
Gateway Arts will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday April 30. The studios will be open to the public and Stephen DeFronzo, our artistic director will be on site to show artists’ work and describe how the studios operate throughout the week.
