“I like making art; it’s regular.”

John Colby was born in the Boston area in 1955 and began attending Gateway Arts in 1990. Colby is an interesting conversationalist with an unusual sense of humor. He has created poetry, drawings, paintings, and ceramic art. Colby’s work conveys a rhythm through mark making. Concentrating on the movement of his hand, Colby gains an understanding of where he has built up visual and tactile texture through layered mark making. His approach combined with selective use or absence of color allows him to create abstract drawings which present varied senses of depth.

Colby has exhibited throughout Massachusetts at the Berenberg Gallery in Boston, Drive-by Projects in Watertown, the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, and the Gateway Gallery in Brookline. His work has also been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Everything in London, England, the Outsider Art Fair in New York and Creativity Explored in San Francisco, CA.
