Each new generation of artists builds upon the last. This is especially true in Western art where freedom of expression allowed enormous changes to the face of mainstream fine art. In the 20th century, art movements traveled from Impressionism to Post- Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism. In the 1960s the art world was shocked by Pop Art, which took its inspiration from commercial art and advertising. Now, the popular arts and fine arts seem conjoined, each gathering inspiration from the other. Today, young artists are inspired by what they see on electronic media. Television, computers, tablets, phones all transmit art in the form of animation. Video game devices, graphic novels and comics inspire young artists to create their own characters and superheroes as they pay homage to the ones they have grown up with through their drawings and paintings.

This exhibition in the Gateway Gallery titled “Media Blitz” highlights the work of Gateway artists who draw inspiration from popular media. These artists tend to be young, although not exclusively. What they recognize as great drawing or painting is found in video games, animated films, graphic novels and comics. Featured in the exhibition are drawings, paintings, artists’ books and three dimensional pieces.
