For the first time Gateway artists have become curators, collaborating to develop a concept, title, and exhibition of their own work, and give voice to their artistic sensibilities.

Guided by staff and visiting curators, twelve Gateway artists collaborated, in harmony, while respecting the visions and choices of their colleagues. They said that “beauty” was not their first criteria in choosing work for the exhibition. The artists were more interested in the stories the artworks conveyed. One of the artists, Darryl Richards said, “the artworks each have their own stories they are trying to tell us.” Another artist, Colleen McFarland said working on the exhibition was a “labor of love,” a statement that gave voice and ownership to an often mystified aspect of exhibiting artworks. Generally, the artists stated they felt the experience gave them a greater understanding of the meaning of art. As artist Allison Doucette said, “I got ideas about what art is.” The resulting exhibition is diverse in subject matter and mediums. The overall harmony of the interaction between the pieces is evident and exciting.
