In this recently composed vignette Gateway artist David O’Toole plays it close to the vest and sticks to the observational facts on a 5 ½ in x 4 ½ in note card. What do we see?
We see a lady of imposing physical stature with what appears to be a tattoo around her upper right arm. She has long black hair tied into a pony tail. She is wearing a fashionably fringed and decoratively stitched one piece garment belted at the waist. Around her neck is a blue and white double stranded necklace. Is it beaded? She stands in a patch of cleared land amongst a plot of what might be immature maize. Caught in a moment of time she seems wary as she casts her gaze beyond the picture frame. What does she see? We don’t know.
